October Birthstone Stud Earrings – Opal, Gold Vermeil

Set on a gold vermeil post, this single opal carries small flashes of green within a milky, pale body — the kind of stone that looks different depending on how the light catches it. Simple enough for every day, with just enough movement to make it interesting.

Opal is one of October's two birthstones, alongside pink tourmaline, so these make sense as a gift for an October birthday, or any occasion tied to someone born that month. They also work well as a way for someone to wear their own birthstone, or for a parent marking a child's birth month.

Each stone is a genuine, natural opal, cut and polished as a smooth oval cabochon rather than faceted, since this lets its play of colour show properly. You may notice small variations in pattern and colour flash from one pair to the next — that's part of what comes with a real stone rather than a manufactured one. The stud itself is finished in gold vermeil: a layer of 18kt gold over sterling silver, giving the warmth of gold with a lighter, everyday feel. Opal is also a little softer than most gemstones, so we'd suggest avoiding knocks, perfume, lotion and water where you can, to help both the stone and the gold layer last.

Handcrafted in our workshop in Skerries, these sit alongside the rest of our birthstone collection — pieces designed to represent the people and months that matter, without making a show of it.
