The two birthstones for August are peridot and spinel. Peridot is a gem born out of volcanic fire. Unlike most stones formed near the Earth’s surface, peridot is formed deep within and is carried upward through eruptions. It can even be found in meteorites. Ancient Egyptians mined it on the Red Sea island of Zabargad as early as 1500 BC. The stone is believed to have been featured in Cleopatra’s famous jewellery collection, long mistaken for emerald.
