How Ring Sizing Works (And Why You Don't Need to Know Yours Before You Order)

Last updated: 5 October 2026

You do not need to know your ring size before you order a wedding ring from Lulu + Belle. You choose your approximate size, we post you a ring sizer, and your ring is not made until you have confirmed the size that fits. If you would rather try rings on, you can book a free viewing appointment in our shop in Skerries.

Size is the worry we hear most from couples buying a ring online, and it is a fair one. A wedding ring is worn every day for decades, so the fit matters. This guide explains how ring sizing works and how to measure at home.

How Ring Sizing Works

A ring size is simply a measurement of the inside of the ring. Different countries write that measurement in different ways.

  • European sizes are numbers, and the number is the inside circumference of the ring in millimetres. A European size 54 measures 54mm around the inside.
  • UK and Irish sizes have traditionally been written as letters.
  • US sizes are written as numbers on a different scale.

Lulu + Belle wedding rings are made in European sizes. Women's rings run from size 50 to 62 and men's rings from size 56 to 70.

Why we offer full sizes only

We offer European full sizes and do not offer half sizes. Each European size is a step of just one millimetre in circumference, which is a smaller step than a full size in the UK or US systems. In practice, that gives you a fine enough choice to find a comfortable fit without halves.

European ring size chart

This ring size chart shows the inside circumference and inside diameter for the European sizes we make. Conversions to UK letters and US numbers are only ever approximate, so if you know your size in another system, treat it as a starting point and confirm it with a ring sizer.

European size Inside circumference Inside diameter
50 50mm 15.9mm
52 52mm 16.6mm
54 54mm 17.2mm
56 56mm 17.8mm
58 58mm 18.5mm
60 60mm 19.1mm
62 62mm 19.7mm
64 64mm 20.4mm
66 66mm 21.0mm
68 68mm 21.6mm
70 70mm 22.3mm

Every size in between is available too. Women's rings are made in each size from 50 to 62, and men's rings in each size from 56 to 70. If you need a bigger or smaller size - we can also do this on request.

Why a ring fits differently from day to day

Fingers change size. They tend to be slimmer when you are cold and fuller when you are warm, after exercise, or later in the day. The same finger on each hand is often a different size, and a wider ring sits more snugly than a narrow ring in the same size. This is why one quick measurement can mislead, and why it helps to check your size more than once.

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

There are three common ways to measure ring size at home. They are not equally reliable.

  • A ring sizer. This is the most dependable method, because you are testing a real fit on your own finger, over your own knuckle.
  • A ring you already own. Measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits the same finger and compare it with the chart above. This works reasonably well, but only if that ring is worn on the same finger and is a similar width.
  • String or a strip of paper. Wrapping string around your finger is the least reliable method. String stretches, paper slips, and neither tells you whether a ring will pass over your knuckle.

Whichever method you use, measure when your hands are at a normal temperature, and check again at a different time of day. A good fit slides over the knuckle with a little resistance and sits comfortably without spinning freely.

How Lulu + Belle Sizes Your Ring: The Ring Sizer Comes to You

We would rather you measured properly than guessed, so we built the measuring into the order itself.

  1. You order your ring. Choose your metal and your approximate European size. A best estimate is all we need at this stage.
  2. We post you a ring sizer. Use the sizer to find your size. The sizer should be adjusted so that it is a snug fit but you should be able to get it over your knuckle with ease. Check the size morning and evening.
  3. You confirm your size. Nothing is made until you tell us the size that fits. If you have chosen engraving, you also approve a digital mock-up at this point, which will be sent to you by email.
  4. Your ring is made. Every wedding ring is made to order. Production takes approximately four weeks from the point your final details are confirmed.
  5. Hallmarked and delivered. Your ring is hallmarked at the Assay Office in Dublin Castle before it is sent to you.

If your ring still does not fit as it should once it arrives, we offer one free ring re-sizing within three months of receiving it. You can read the details in our returns policy.

Matched pairs need two sizes

If you are choosing a matching pair, such as The Two of Us Wedding Ring for her and for him, each partner is sized separately. Two hands are never the same, and each ring is confirmed on its own before it is made.

Buying a ring as a surprise

If the ring is a surprise, choose your best estimate. A ring your partner already wears on the same finger is the most useful clue. The free re-sizing within three months is there for exactly this situation.

Or Try Them On in Skerries

If you would like to see the rings and be sized in person, you can book a free 45-minute wedding ring viewing appointment at our shop at 40 Strand Street, Skerries, Co. Dublin. It is a relaxed way to compare widths and metals on your own hand and to settle your size before you order.

Ring Sizing FAQ

How do I find my ring size without going to a shop?
The most reliable way to find your ring size at home is with a ring sizer. Lulu + Belle posts a ring sizer after you order and does not start making the ring until your size is confirmed.

What is a ring sizer?
A ring sizer is a simple tool that lets you test ring sizes on your own finger. It is more accurate than string or paper because it shows how a size passes over your knuckle and sits on your finger.

Which ring sizes does Lulu + Belle use?
Lulu + Belle wedding rings are made in European full sizes. Women's rings are available in sizes 50 to 62 and men's rings in sizes 56 to 70. Half sizes are not offered. Larger or smaller sizes can be made on request.

Are European, UK and US ring sizes different?
Yes. European sizes are the inside circumference of the ring in millimetres, UK and Irish sizes are traditionally letters, and US sizes are numbers on a separate scale. Conversions between them are approximate.

What happens if I order the wrong size?
The size you choose when ordering is only an estimate. Lulu + Belle posts a ring sizer and you confirm your final size before the ring goes into production. If the finished ring still does not fit, Lulu + Belle offers one free re-sizing within three months of receiving it.

Can I be sized in person?
Yes. You can book a free 45-minute wedding ring viewing appointment at the Lulu + Belle shop at 40 Strand Street, Skerries, Co. Dublin.

Why does my ring fit differently from day to day?
Fingers are slimmer when cold and fuller when warm, after exercise and later in the day. Checking your size at different times gives a more dependable answer.

Do both partners need to be sized separately for a matched pair?
Yes. Each ring in a matched pair is sized and confirmed separately.

How long does a Lulu + Belle wedding ring take to make?
Production takes approximately four weeks from the point your size and any engraving details are confirmed.

In Short

Not knowing your ring size is no reason to put off choosing your ring. Pick your best estimate, and the ring sizer does the rest before anything is made.
